*Update* West Nile Virus Activity Detected in Darby Township
Additional West Nile Virus (WNV) positive mosquito samples have been collected in Darby Township. Continued surveillance will take place near previously positive collection sites. At this point in the season, the WNV transmission cycle has amplified the virus in the bird host population. As a result, positive mosquito samples and continued West Nile activity are expected until the first frost.
Since WNV is prevalent in the mosquito population, residents are strongly encouraged to take precautions to reduce the risk of mosquito bites:
Stay indoors during peak mosquito hours (dusk to dawn).
Wear protective clothing such as long sleeves, pants, and closed-toed shoes when outdoors.
Apply insect repellent containing at least 30% DEET to exposed skin.
Eliminate standing water from your property, including birdbaths, wheelbarrows, flowerpots, and childrenโs toys, which can serve as mosquito breeding grounds.
